Stina Persson
Stina Persson is from the little Swedish town Lund, she has also lived in Tokyo, Florence and New York, where she also came to terms with the way ordinary people live. She now lives with her husband and two sons in Stockholm, and also works there.
"I have fallen into quite and interesting field," is Stina Persson's explanation for her main design field. "What is asked from me is fashion illustrations, though they are rarely for fashion brands or companies. Instead it is clients that want a fashion look. It could be anything from cars to hand soap."
Her motifs often come from the world of fashion, travel and glamour. But angle, rough edges, raw, incomplete patched keep cropping up in her elegant water-colour, gouche and ink compositions.
Her fields of work have included literally everything, from skateboard design to shrimp salad packaging and interesting Japanese and New York-based fine art projects.
"Ideally I want it to have a rough edge, but to be beautiful as well. Just being rough or distorted is too easy. On the other hand, only being pretty is so very boring. When working with ink, I like to use wooden sticks that I pick up from the ground to draw with as they seem to make an interesting line. For colour I use Doctor Martin's transparent dyes, acrylics or paper collage."
What I really like about Stina is that she gets inspired by watching people around her. "When I lived in New York, I loved the roughness and all the ugliness of Queens, where I lived. It made me really open my eyes and forced me to search for hidden beauty. The people of New Yorkers to the greatest inspiration there is."
Deanne Cheuk
Deanne Cheuk is an illustrator and designer who lives in New York. Although she actually comes from Perth in Australia. She herself feels that she is influenced by "the impressionists, Art Nouveau and Art Deco among other things"; figures of girls and women often crop up in her graphic work, with ornaments she has woven around them. Elements of surreal collage provide a contrast, something she keeps going back to. She is also know for her plant images, which are reminiscent of plates in botanical textbooks.
She thinks it is now easier for free-lance designers to market their own work: "I love it that self-publishing has become so much more accessible through print and through the web, almost anything is possible at the moment."
When working she lets herself by guided by random ideas, for example by colours that just happen to come into her mind. But she always pics up a pencil or a paintbrush before every idea: "usually I'll just start working and the ideas come part way through."
Over the last year I have really got into using inks and paints and the idea of just using whatever colour comes into your mind has really help bring my images come to life as they feel like they have more texture and meaning to them. I hope to carry on experimenting with colour and trying new things as new project emerge.

Cecilia Carlstedt
Cecilia Carlstedt was born in Stockholm in 1977, and was always interested in illustration, even from a very early age. She received her degree n graphic design and image making from London college of Communication, after which she returned to her home town to start a career as a full-time illustrator. She has been commissioned by a wide variety of clients, but her beautifully composed, stylish and colourful work has naturally endeared her to the world of fashion. She likes to combine drawing with various media for a rich and unpredictable expression, and finds inspiration in fashion and art - and especially in exploring secluded places with her camera.

Florian Nicolle
Florian Nicolle, aka Neo, is a 23 year old graphic designer and illustrator. He is French and live in Caen, France. Nicolle is a graphic designer graduate that developed a passion for illustration while taking his design course. He is now planning to move to Paris and illustration has become his main route in the industry. Neo really enjoys art and likes to observe illustration of famous and anonymous artists with different styles to get inspired. With his drawings he wants to pass the feeling that the viewer is being observed by the drawing, which gives us a very good feeling about his drawings.
"I am a 23 year old freelancer and I still have a long way to go before choosing precisely in which field I am really ambitious to go. In fact, I am fascinated with everything regarding illustration and graphics design. I would like to discover a lot of new things and areas in the world of design and surely this will lead me in a specific direction eventually."

Caroline Seales isn't a well known artist, I found her in one of my 'Digital Artist' magazines. I think the way she draws figures is really interesting. They come across cartoony but also so realistic that they just draw you in. Caroline does a lot of life drawing, I have done it in the past, but buying a small note book and just sitting in the street drawing people can really help you to learn the structure of a person. So during my year I will try my best to get out and just draw what I see.
Abigail Larson
Abigail had ambitions of becoming an opera singer and joining the circus whilst growing up, and although neither of those ended up working out too well, she still enjoys both.
She began drawing with ink and painting with watercolour, she has developed a taste to flat digital colouring, however, and only gets a craving from paint now and again. Her inspirations change almost weekly, ranging from Edgar Allen Poe to Lewis Carroll to Dr.Seuss. Her greatest artistic influences have been Arthur Rackham, John William Waterhouse and Edward Grey.
Any spare time that's not spent basking in the darkness or watching re-runs of The Addam's Family, she is creating art for private clients, illustrating bookks and spending time with her favourite long-legged beasts, ghouls, ghosts and various other things that go bump in the night.
Abigail's work actually really influenced me during my Alice in Wonderland project during my last term. At first her work came across very mysterious to me as she usually uses very dark shades in her work. The deeper you look into her work though the more you discover. The amount of detail in all of her drawings is just amazing and I'm hoping I will be able to say I give my work this amount of attention and try hard with everything I do in my upcoming projects.
Barnaby Ward
"Cartoonist Barnaby Ward has a wife, some cats and a website. He lives on a small island and spends far too much money on gas and too little time at the beach."
"I adore the sheer amount of imagination that goes into these pieces, whether they're original art or from narrative inspiration, they're cute without any trace of saccharine"
His inspirations include:
ffffound, sci-fi-o-rama, Supersonic electronic, The fox is black, Ben Marra, Aseyn, Tadahion Uesugi, Fuce Ueda and Ronnie del Camien.
Tattoos - My Work
This was actually the first tattoo design I ever drew for someone personally. I usually just drew them in my spare time, not for anyone in particular. The client asked for two roses and in the past I used to love drawing and painting roses but hadn't for a long time. But because I knew that this piece was going to be drawn onto someone for the rest of their life it made me try the hardest I've ever tried to get it perfect. I was so proud of what I
could achieve without even realising it. Ever since I did this piece I started on a new one for my own pleasure to hang. I've realise that the more colour you add that others may not see the more detailed it seems and it brings out a richer texture. If it hadn't of been for my client I wouldn't have even tried to achieve such levels of painting. Thats why people around me really inspire me, because they push my limits for me without even realising it.

The style of Simon Russell's work really catches my eye, because I'm doing motion for my first project this year his short animations will really help me with my work and expand my ideas to try and create something new and different to what you see everyday.

Nature - My Photography
My natural surroundings have always inspired me no matter where I am, whether its in my own back garden or out in the country somewhere. There is always something new to look at, something you haven't seen before. Animals have always been an interest to me, the way they move and the way they act. Even the ugliest and most unpleasant of animals have moments when they just look elegant and capture that particular moment in mind forever. The image is of a sea gull gliding and as the sun hit it, it just looked beautiful, if you look closely at the image you can see all its individual feathers. I could happily sit outside with a pen and paper and just draw everything around me.

"Enjoy inspirations from every detail in the world"
"I love stars, clouds, night sky, foxes, bunnies, owls, table cloths/patterns.
I love sky...especially the passing clouds that look like a curious baby whale.
I enjoy the beauty...of millions of lonely fireflies above the deep velvet sky.
I listen to the rain...tapping outside my window in a Sunday morning."
"Millions of wonders and beautiful things around me have inspired to my creations. Even though they are pen on paper and coloured digitally, yet every one of them is like a journal of my life findings and emotions that I have felt during special moments. I enjoy stargazing, cloud watching and daydreamng. Currently available for freelance illustration/design work."
Inkie
Graffer Inkie has been a dominant force on the urban art scene for over 20 years. Originally from Bristol but now an adopted Londoner. Inkie has turned his artistic affections to graphic and clothing design as well as full-time role as Head of Creative Design at SEGA. His images are visually stunning with tremendous use of colour, panache and intricate designs. A force to be reckoned with on the international graffiti world. This friendly Bristol Boy spent time with SSS and told them exactly what makes him tick:-
When did you begin to graffiti? In 1984 over 20 years ago now...
What are your current projects? Clothing ranges, screen prints, rugs, pottery and some wood carving/stonecarving. I also want to write a book on the history of Japanese video gaming graphics and its influence on Western graphic design.
You grew up in Bristol. How did surroundings effect you? Its a beautiful Georgian city with a very creative outlook/attitude tucked away from the rest of the UK and has a lot of good cider, weed and mushrooms. That helped. By going to exhibitions and updating my art data banks. The styles used in the graffiti are everywhere from street signs to plants to ancient temples. The key is to combine all these mentally and freestyle your ideas out in your design.
Kent Melton
"The middle child of two middle children"
When he was thirteen his Aunt Nancy worked at a big printing company and would sometimes bring him large scraps of paper. He didn't have any real art supplies so he would draw with his dads ballpoint pens.
"I loved drawing...but not the drawings, so when I was finished I would always throw them away. When my mom saw this dragon she like it well enough to rescue it from the trash and even enter it in a community art contest four years later...We didn't have art classes at school and I remember carefully trying to figure out how they all worked. I always wanted to use them sparingly so that they might last me until I was old enough to buy some more."

I grew up with Disney so it has always big a huge part of my life, I still enjoy watching the films now. In the past I have been really inspired by the style of disney and how the characters are shown. When I began using photoshop I created myself as a Disney character, for one of my projects. When I was younger i always wished I would grow up to work for Disney, and I will always have that appreciation for the work.
